Ponder

A shadow work evening book

Ponder

For readers who lie awake with old regrets. Thirty nights to look, slowly, at the parts of yourself you never looked at. Ten quiet minutes before sleep. No therapy jargon. No trauma talk. No stack of blank pages.

See what is inside

Why it exists

At night, the old things come back.

The regret. The resentment you still carry. The version of you that you never let out. A podcast does not fix it. Most of us have never had a quiet way to look at it.

This book gives you one. Each night opens with a passage from a great writer. Dostoevsky, Marcus Aurelius, Nietzsche, Seneca, Schopenhauer, Epictetus. They do the heavy lifting. Then a plain explanation, Carl Jung’s idea of the shadow in our own words, and three questions.

It is made for a long life, not a young one. Regret, the unlived life, old grudges, the life review.

Thirty nights, six parts

  1. The MaskThe face you show. Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus.
  2. What Irritates YouWhat you judge in others. Schopenhauer, Epictetus.
  3. The UndergroundSpite, resentment, the grudge you keep. Dostoevsky.
  4. The AbyssHow we become what we fight. Nietzsche.
  5. The Unlived LifeRegret and lost time. Seneca, Schopenhauer.
  6. The Life ReviewPutting it together. Night 30 is the letter you never sent.

A sample night · Night 16, The Abyss

“He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee.”

Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, 146, translated by Helen Zimmern (1907). Public domain.

In plain words

Nietzsche is warning us. Fight something for long enough and you start to look like it. The parent you swore you would never become. The rival whose habits you now share.

The shadow in it

Jung called this projection. What we cannot stand in another person is often a part of ourselves we never accepted. The fight feels like it is out there. Part of it is in here. The point is not blame. It is to see the pattern, so it stops running you.

Three questions

  1. Who did you fight for years?
  2. What did you start doing that you hated in them?
  3. If you saw that habit in a stranger, what would you call it?

Then half a page to write, and one line to close the night.
